C'mon Kevin, let's go to 0.7

Kevin, it’s time for Australia to meet its obligations to the world and make a plan to reach the 0.7% target for overseas development assistance.

C’mon Kevin!

The Millennium Development Goals are a unique opportunity to finally end poverty. They are achievable, time bound goals with measurable targets that the world has agreed to. They represent a compact between the developed and developing world.
0.7 is the % of gross national income (GNI) that Australia has pledged to give for the past 40 years with a renewed agreement in 2002 to set a plan for achieving 0.7% by 2015 in support of the MDGs!
We have made the promises, we have the means, now it's time fulfill our commitments.
C'mon Kevin, Let's go to 0.7!

The Millennium Development Goals

Goal 1: End poverty & hunger.

Reduce those suffering from hunger & poverty by half

Extreme poverty is the most severe state of poverty, where people cannot meet basic needs for survival, such as food, water, clothing, shelter, sanitation, education and health care. 1.1 billion people currently live under these conditions.

Goal 2: Universal primary education.

Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling

115 million school-aged children are not in school and 133 million young people cannot read and write.

Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women.

Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education

Two-thirds of the world’s illiterate people are female. Furthermore, girls denied an education are more vulnerable to poverty, violence, abuse, death during childbirth and at the risk of disease, including HIV/AIDS.

Goal 4: Reduce child mortality.

Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five

Each day, nearly 30,000 children die from illnesses that are either preventable or can easily be cured. That’s 1 child every 3 seconds!

Goal 5: Improve maternal health.

Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio

More than 500,000 women die during pregnancy or childbirth every year, while at least 10 million suffer injury, infection, or disability

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases

About 4.8 million people became newly infected with HIV in 2003 (more than 13,000 each day)
Malaria causes more than 300 million acute illnesses and at least one million deaths annually

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability.

Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes; reverse loss of environmental resources.

We are consuming resources at an unparalleled rate. Forests are disappearing, climate change is wreaking havoc around the world. Over 2.4 billion people lack access to proper sanitation facilities and one billion lack access to drinkable water.

Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development.

Fulfill our global commitments to each other

The MDG's are a compact between countries of the world. Without cooperation on both parts the goals are just another expression of hope without the resources to really make a difference. Australia is dragging its feet - C'mon Kevin, Let's go to 0.7
